History: Launched in 1963, Colt 45 represented a move by National Brewing Company into the malt liquor game where the only national competition was Country Club. The Colt 45 logo features a kicking horse in a horseshoe, which combined with the name pays some tribute to where the brand’s name actually comes from. Contrary to some popular belief, the Colt 45 name isn’t a reference to the handgun but instead has ties to football. The inspiration behind the name is actually Jerry Hill, the running back who wore number 45 for the 1963 Baltimore Colts.
